How to Grow a Stubble Beard

How to Grow a Stubble Beard

Is any form of facial hair more versatile than the stubble beard? Whether one of the Hollywood elite or just an average Joe, a stubble beard can work wonders for any man. The style has been around for ages, and it's not going anywhere soon.

The stubble beard used to be seen as a sign of poor grooming, but it came into fashion in the '80s thanks to style icons like Don Johnson of Miami Vice and singer George Michael. These days, you're more likely than not to spot a rock star or Hollywood hero wearing a stubble beard at some point, whether it's simply a transitional look for frequent beard-wearers like John Hamm and Chris Hemsworth, or the standard style of guys like Bradley Cooper or Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine.

While stubble beards don't require any fancy techniques to maintain, there are rules you should follow when growing one out. The good news is that you just need to observe the basics to keep things looking great. Follow these simple steps and you should be well on your way to a perfect expression of stubble.

Tools of the Trade

You can't create a stubble look without the right men’s grooming tools . You'll need to put some research into finding the right beard trimmer kit for you. There are a million different electric razors and trimmers on the market, and whittling down the choices can be daunting. Your best bet is to go with something that keeps your styling options open.

You might not realize it, but there's more than one length for a stubble beard. You can go with the traditional shave for a tight 5 o'clock shadow, or grow heavy stubble out to a length of up to 3 centimeters. It's all about finding the beard style you're comfortable with.

It's a good idea to grab a stubble trimmer with some play in its guard, as it allows you to push in close on your face. After you get a few days' worths of growth going, you'll have something to work with. When you go in for the first shave, start with the guard set near its maximum length, and work in from there. Keep shaving down until you reach the look that works for you.

Maintenance Is Key

If you want to keep your stubble looking sharp, it's essential to stick with a routine. A stubble beard isn't a style you can simply touch up once a week. Depending on how fast your facial hair grows, you'll want to attack the growth once every three to four days.

Make sure to take your time when giving your stubble a revamp. There's no need to rush through and buzz the whole thing in 60 seconds. Dedicate a few minutes to passing through your stubble multiple times in order to get the sharpest look. Again, the best approach is to set your trimmer's guard to a longer position and run through two or three times to clean things up.

Watch the Lines

While there's no doubt keeping stubble at the appropriate length is crucial, it's important to work the shape of your beard as well. The classic stubble look is known for the sharp lines that keep the beard in check. Running those lines with a trimmer or electric razor is an art!

This is another area of the stubble beard where you can play a bit. It's up to you to decide what style you want to go for. One way to keep things looking fresh is to follow the natural growth lines of your beard. If your facial hair starts to get sparse on the sides of your cheeks, shave those patches away and go with a clearly defined line lower down.

If you're feeling brave, you can go with a combo of trimmer and razor to put together a fade, causing your hair to smoothly transition from long to clean-cut. It'll take some time and practice to determine the ratio of straight shaving to trimming with the guard that works best for you, but the final result can be super impressive.

It's extremely important to keep a stubble beard well-nourished. You don't want to have the sandpaper beard people usually associate with stubble. The same care should be taken for the skin under your beard as well. You want to keep things feeling fresh, healthy and smooth all around.

Our Beard Growth Oil and Vitamin Spray will certainly do the trick. Our Growth Oil formula nourishes your hair follicles and the skin underneath your beard while simultaneously moisturizing and softening your beard. With our growth oil and beard growth vitamins, you can promote healthy beard growth while eliminating beard dandruff and that new beard itch.

Another great option is our Beard Balm, which also moisturizes and refreshes while also combating the itchiness that can result from a coarse stubble beard. You can also massage our beard cream through beards or stubble of any length to hydrate even the driest of beard deserts. As long as you use these items as part of your regular beard care routine, your stubble beard should be in top-notch shape.

(Did we mention it'll leave you smelling good as well?)
