The 5 Best Ways to Manage a Curly Beard
Why Do I Have Curly Beard Hair?
Your beard hair is curly because of the shape of the hair follicles on your face. Hair follicles have their own individual shape and the more curved the follicle path is, the curlier the resulting hair becomes.
Curly beards have the same amount of hair as a straight beard, but look much fuller with their natural volume. Curly hair grows in all different directions and folds over itself. Each individual hair follicle is wound up like a spring. Those blessed with the thick curls know that with a great beard comes great responsibility. While you’ll have an easier time growing out a thicket of hair, you also need to have a different set of grooming methods compared to straight hair beards. There are certain things you don’t want to do to your beard or else you’ll compromise the curls and the look. But once you get the hang of it, your beard will be flowing for days. Here’s some of the best ways to manage a curly beard.
What Are the Best Ways to Manage Curly Beard Hair?
1. Consistent Trims
A curly beard can grow wild and out of control quick. Not the good type of wild either, but broken, frizzy and the unmanageable type. You’ll have to deal with something the ladies have been complaining about for years – split ends. A split end is hair that has been damaged at the tip because of dryness or ill-treatment. Both of these things can be easily remedied or stopped in their tracks completely. You’re going to want to trim the ends of your beard on a two to three week basis. Follow these simple steps.- Grab a pair of sharp scissors or beard trimmer that is both clean and has been oiled up. (Drip some of your beard oil on the trimmer.)
- Next look for any fast growing stray hairs. These are most likely going to be trouble down the line. Get rid of them.
- Proceed to cut and trim accordingly. Use scissors over trimmers when possible, since you’ll want a clean slice that won’t blunt the edge of your beard.
Be careful with your weekly trimming sessions. You don’t want to turn a routine cut into a beard ending disaster.
2. Keeping it Short
Curly facial hair is closer to your skin, because when it grows it twirls back inwards. You have to be vigilant in upkeep when first growing your beard out. This means that all of that bacteria you miss when washing is also closer to your skin. Once you decide on a shorter length, you can upkeep that regularly by trimming down to that same length once a week. You won’t have to worry too much about split ends or ingrown hairs. A shorter curly beard won’t dry out as fast either. Dry beards can be easily managed by applying our moisturizing beard cream. Not everyone wants the massive beard, but you’ll still have the option to keep growing with a thick and shorter beard.
3. Develop a Washing System
Getting rid of the curly woes requires shampooing your beard at least a few times a week. Beard oil should always be used daily, as it will smooth out your beard and moisturize your hair. Shampooed and oiled beards are also much easier to maintain once you get to the brushing stage. On the days you wash your beard, you’ll want to do the following:- Use your beard shampoo when your beard needs it the most. This could be right in the morning when you have beard bedhead or right before bed after a long day of facing the elements.
- Use your beard comb to get rid of knots and tangles before they get out of control and before you shower.
- Don’t pull on your beard when you dry it. Instead, gently pat it with a towel and don’t let it air dry. Avoid using a hair dryer to prevent any unnecessary damage.
Eventually you’ll get in your groove and know which days are best for your new beard care regimen.
4. Regular Brushing
You heard that right bropunzels. You’ve got to brush your beard everyday. All you really need is a boar bristle beard brush. This will get rid of the unruly frizz and keep it looking natural. Do not use any regular plastic combs or hair brushes as these will definitely damage your beard. Brush your beard at least once a day. You can do it as many times as you’d like, as long as you don’t overdo it. Brush downwards and let the bristles slip through without pulling. You may see some hair get dislodged, but that’s alright. They’re weak and weren’t meant to stay in your beard anyhow. A brush right before bed can be a great alternative to a shower.5. Natural Straightening Comb Out
Sometimes you’ll want to straighten your beard out for the day. It can add length and you can still keep the volume. You want to avoid using any heating or unnatural style products such as a straightening iron as that’ll damage the integrity of your beard. Before you start you’ll need a two things: your quality beard comb and either beard wax or pomade. After your wash your beard and it's slightly damp (not wet) you can gently work your comb through your beard. Similar to how you’d brush, but this time you’re combing it out. Now keep combing until everything has been straightened out as far as you can manage without breaking any hairs. Before your beard can completely dry out and curl back, apply your pomade or wax. Now you’ll have a straightened long beard that retains its thickness. No beard will go untamed. Let yourself bring out the wildness in style.
